One of the few Jewish artists tolerated by Stalin, Anatoly Kaplan (1902-1980) preserved the world of his childhood in his art works. A contemporary of Joseph Dorfman, he portrayed the tradition of Jewish people in a bygone era. Life of Jews in "shtetl" (the villages in the Ukraine, with a large Jewish population) was his principal theme.  These are woodcuts he made for scenes from some of the poems in Shostakovich’s song cycle From Yiddish Folk Poetry, opus 79.
